Why Blur Faces? A Practical Privacy Primer

Every week a post goes viral with a kid's face in the background of a restaurant photo. Or a coworker who asked not to be in the frame. Or a neighbor's car with a plate clearly visible on a Craigslist listing. These aren't edge cases — they're the norm.

Consent you probably didn't get

In most public spaces, it's legal to photograph people. But legal doesn't mean invited. The person walking past your camera didn't agree to be on your feed. If you post without blurring, you've made a choice for them.

It's the same with children. A classroom group shot, an easy enough thing to share with family, becomes searchable with the right face-indexing tools. The "small, nobody cares" calculus changes when a face can be extracted and reused.

What GDPR actually says

If you're in the EU (or sharing with EU residents), a recognizable face in a photo you publish is personal data. You need a legal basis to process it — usually consent or legitimate interest. Blurring removes the personal data from the published version. No face, no GDPR problem.
